Fox Joins Spurs, LaVine Heads to Kings in Major Three-Team NBA Trade

Posted : 03 February 2025

A significant three-team trade in the NBA took place between Sunday and Monday, although it wasn’t as shocking as the blockbuster move from the previous day. According to ESPN’s top basketball analyst Shams Charania, the trade sees De’Aaron Fox heading to the San Antonio Spurs while Zach LaVine moves to the Sacramento Kings. The deal also involves multiple player swaps and draft picks, adding another  major shake-up to the league just days before the trade deadline.

As part of the trade, Fox and Jordan McLaughlin will join the Spurs, providing Victor Wembanyama with a high-caliber backcourt partner for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, the Kings will acquire LaVine and Sidi Sissoko, along with three first-round and three second-round draft picks. The Chicago Bulls, on the other hand, will receive Zach Collins, Tre Jones, and Kevin Huerter, as well as a 2025 first-round pick from San Antonio, as they continue restructuring their roster.

The primary reason for Sacramento's decision to move Fox was the understanding that he had no plans to extend his contract beyond the 2025-26 season. Rather than risk losing him for nothing, the Kings opted to trade him while securing a valuable replacement before Thursday’s deadline. The Spurs, in turn, added an experienced and dynamic guard to complement Wembanyama, while the Bulls took a step in their rebuilding process by offloading LaVine’s massive $138 million contract.

Fox, who was drafted fifth overall by the Kings in 2017, has averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.9 rebounds throughout his career. This season, he made history by scoring 109 points in a single day, a feat previously achieved only by Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant. Meanwhile, LaVine, a two-time All-Star, had been with Chicago since 2017 following a stint with Minnesota. His arrival in Sacramento reunites him with DeMar DeRozan as the Kings push for a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
