The Miss Amnesty Nigeria basketball competition, part of the Grassroots Discovery of Women in Sports initiative, has reached an exciting stage with four academies securing places in the semi-finals. The tournament, sponsored by the Tracy Macwary Foundation, is taking place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba and focuses on promoting female participation in sports and youth empowerment.
The semi-finalists are Bayelsa Queens, Delta Queens, Discovery Academy, and Divine Speed Academy. Divine Speed Academy, based in Warri, opened their campaign with a commanding 38–13 victory over fellow Warri side Peace Academy. After winning two matches in Group A, they have secured their place in the final four and await their opponent from Group B.
Bayelsa Queens also impressed with a dominant 18–4 win over Peace Academy, while Discovery Academy from Warri claimed their spot after defeating Anambra Queens 25–15. However, they fell short against Delta Queens Asaba, who triumphed 36–26 to book their place in the next round.
Speaking about the foundation's vision, Mrs. Tracy Macwary emphasized that the tournament is part of a broader initiative to support the girl child through sports. “The Tracy Macwary Foundation aims to uplift women and take them off the streets by providing opportunities through athletics. This basketball competition is a key part of that goal,” she explained.
Macwary also revealed the prize structure for the tournament, with ₦1.5 million awarded to the winner, ₦1 million to the runner-up, and ₦500,000 for the third-place team.
Bayelsa Queens’ coach, Tony Nelson, expressed optimism about his team’s performance and prospects. “We’ve trained diligently and are confident of reaching the final. Our program is built on a legacy of producing national-level players and promoting youth development through basketball,” he said.
The semi-final matches are scheduled to continue at the Indoor Sports Hall of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Sunday, with anticipation building for the final showdown among the country’s rising female basketball stars.
