Former D'Tigers Star Ugo Udezue Unveils South-East Basketball Tournament And New Ebonyi Court

Posted : 02 June 2026

Former Nigerian international basketball star Ugo Udezue has finalised arrangements to host an elite three-day South-East Basketball Tournament in Ebonyi State. The regional competition will take place from June 5 to June 7, 2026. The event is designed to accelerate the development of grassroots basketball across the eastern region.

The tournament will serve as the official launchpad for a brand-new basketball court constructed by the veteran sports administrator. Udezue currently serves as the South-East representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF). He also directs affairs as the Chief Executive Officer of premium African sportswear brand AFA Sports.

The highly anticipated competition will take place at the premises of the Ebonyi Shopping Mall in Abakaliki. Participating teams will be drawn from all five southeastern states, including Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Abia, and the host state, Ebonyi. A major highlight of the three-day sports event will be the formal commissioning of the Richard Idike Basketball Court.

The state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, will attend the grand opening as the Special Guest of Honour. Idike will officially inaugurate the new facility during the tournament's opening ceremonies. Stakeholders, talent scouts, coaches, and basketball enthusiasts from across Nigeria are expected to converge on Abakaliki for the tournament.

Udezue explained that the infrastructure project was necessary because the state previously lacked a viable playing court. He noted that the region produces exceptionally gifted players despite lacking facilities. Half of the roster of Coal City Blazers, the only Premier League basketball team in the region, consists of Ebonyi indigenes.

The former national team star urged private investors to stop relying solely on government funding for sports. He stressed that critical stakeholders must actively commit resources to sports infrastructure. He confirmed that his foundation previously donated specialized uprights to the Enugu Indoor Sports Stadium. This latest court in Abakaliki represents the next phase of his infrastructural push.
