Finland pulled off the biggest shock of the EuroBasket tournament so far, defeating Serbia 92-86 in the round of 16 on Saturday. Elias Valtonen scored eight crucial points in the final two minutes to seal the victory, while Lauri Markkanen poured in a game-high 29 points for the Finns.
Nikola Jokic did everything he could to keep Serbia alive, finishing with 33 points, but his efforts were not enough as Finland executed down the stretch. The Serbs briefly held a 77-75 lead after a six-point run in the fourth quarter, but Valtonen’s clutch three-pointer swung the momentum back to Finland. He added a tip-in and another long-range shot in the closing moments to secure their first win over Serbia since 2009.
Serbia, considered one of the pre-tournament favorites, fell in the round of 16 for the second successive edition. The team’s struggles on the glass proved costly as Finland grabbed 20 offensive rebounds. Jokic admitted afterward that the defeat stemmed from a lack of intensity: “They played a great game. From the start we didn’t come ready… 20 offensive rebounds is just unacceptable.”
The Finns will now face either France or Georgia in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Elsewhere on Saturday, three other nations advanced. Turkey defeated Sweden 85-79 behind a dominant display from NBA All-Star Alperen Sengun, who tallied 24 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists. Germany overcame a slow start to beat Portugal 85-58, with captain Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner both scoring 16 points. Meanwhile, Lithuania knocked out co-hosts Latvia 88-79 in Riga, led by Arnas Velicka’s 21 points and 12 assists.
Looking ahead, Turkey will face Poland or Bosnia-Herzegovina, Germany will meet Italy or Slovenia, and Lithuania await either Greece or Israel in the next round. The quarterfinals begin Tuesday, with defending champion Spain already out after being eliminated in the group stage by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Greece.
