Final 8: Hoops N’ Reads stare at elimination as City Chiefs await

Hoops N’ Reads Basketball Club will have little margin for error when they face Gboko City Chiefs in a crucial Match Day 5 encounter of the Final 8 Playoffs, with captain Francis Anekwe calling on his teammates to deliver a much-needed turnaround.

The Lagos-based side head into the decisive fixture without a win from their opening four games, leaving their Final 8 campaign hanging by a thread after another narrow defeat to 313 Warriors.

Hoops N’ Reads battled throughout the contest but ultimately fell 66-60 to the Warriors, suffering their fourth consecutive loss and increasing the pressure on the team ahead of their meeting with City Chiefs.

For Anekwe, popularly known as “Mr. Reliable,” the disappointing run is not a true reflection of the team’s ability. The captain believes the Lagos giants have enough quality to respond when it matters most.

“We know our last games have not been the best of basketball, but we hope and assure you that tomorrow’s game against Gboko City Chiefs will be a better one,” Anekwe said while thanking supporters for their continued backing.

The captain’s message comes at a critical moment for Hoops N’ Reads, who must rediscover their winning touch quickly if they are to remain in contention for a place in the next stage of the competition.

While their four defeats have exposed areas that need improvement, the team has also shown enough competitiveness to suggest that a breakthrough victory could change the direction of their campaign.

Anekwe has therefore urged the players to remain united and focused, while expressing confidence that the squad can produce a stronger performance against the City Chiefs.

Beyond the court, the captain acknowledged the contribution of club president Olumide Oyedeji, popularly known as OLY, whose continued support and encouragement have provided the players with additional motivation during a difficult campaign.

With the stakes rising and their Final 8 hopes under serious threat, Hoops N’ Reads must now turn Anekwe’s words into action when they take on Gboko City Chiefs.
