The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has formally recognised Abdullahi Mustapha as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), following the successful conduct of the federation’s elective congress on October 15.
In a letter signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, the world governing body congratulated Mustapha and other elected board members who will oversee Nigerian basketball from 2026 to 2030.
FIBA acknowledged receipt of the NBBF’s official communication confirming the election results, commending the federation for its commitment to good governance and adherence to its constitution and applicable FIBA regulations.
The recognition provides international backing for the new administration as it prepares to steer Nigerian basketball through the next four-year leadership cycle.
FIBA also acknowledged the contributions of Nigerian authorities and other stakeholders who supported the electoral process, emphasising the importance of institutional cooperation in the administration and development of the sport.
The international body further expressed appreciation to the outgoing board, led by Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, for its contributions to Nigerian basketball during its tenure.
Zagklis also recalled his recent meeting with Mustapha in Berlin and expressed optimism about meeting the new NBBF president again in person.
He wished Mustapha and his board members success as they assume responsibility for the federation’s affairs.
FIBA’s recognition comes as the new leadership prepares to address the priorities of Nigerian basketball, including grassroots development, improved administration, and the strengthening of the country’s competitiveness in continental and international competitions.
With the 2026–2030 tenure underway, expectations will centre on the administration’s ability to translate the international endorsement into sustainable progress for the game across Nigeria.
