FIBA Clarification Puts NBBF International Board Seat in Spotlight

Posted : 15 October 2026

The international representative’s position on the incoming Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board has emerged as a major point of contention ahead of the crucial election, following correspondence between federation president Ahmadu Musa Kida and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

In a letter dated October 12, Kida informed the chairman of the NBBF Electoral Committee that he had contacted FIBA over the disputed position but was yet to receive an official response.

The development has intensified scrutiny of the process for determining who should occupy the seat reserved for the most senior Nigerian holding an elected position within a FIBA body on the NBBF Board for the 2026–2030 tenure.

At the centre of the dispute is retired Col. Sam Ahmedu, President of FIBA Africa Zone 3, who has challenged aspects of the electoral process and sought recognition as the federation’s international representative.

Kida disclosed that the matter was discussed during a physical meeting with FIBA on September 18, 2026, on the sidelines of the FIBA Women’s World Cup, where the international body reportedly promised to provide an official clarification.

However, the absence of a definitive response has left the issue unresolved, with the election scheduled for October 15.

In his correspondence, Kida maintained that neither the NBBF president nor the Electoral Committee could override FIBA’s position, arguing that the federation must await the international body’s official determination.

He also referenced Ahmedu’s previous recognition as the international representative on the NBBF Board in 2021, citing a letter from FIBA issued at the time.

That precedent has raised questions about the criteria governing the appointment for the next four-year administration and whether any relevant circumstances or applicable rules have changed since the previous recognition.

The issue has therefore shifted beyond Ahmedu’s individual claim to the broader question of how the NBBF Constitution should be interpreted and applied in determining international representation.

While Kida’s letter confirms that the federation has sought FIBA’s guidance, it does not establish the outcome of that engagement or resolve the competing concerns surrounding the position.

Stakeholders will consequently be looking for clarity on the constitutional provisions governing the seat, the criteria for identifying the most senior eligible Nigerian representative, and the formal basis for the eventual decision.

The timing is particularly significant because an unresolved eligibility dispute could generate further questions about the composition of the incoming board if the election proceeds without a definitive clarification.

A response from FIBA before the polls would provide an opportunity for the electoral authorities to address the matter in accordance with the applicable rules. A response after the election, however, could complicate efforts to settle any resulting dispute.

The Electoral Committee is therefore under pressure to ensure that the process is transparent and that its decisions are supported by the relevant constitutional provisions and verifiable documentation.

Ahmedu’s claim, like any competing position, would need to be assessed against those rules and the official records of elected positions within FIBA.

The unfolding controversy comes at a critical moment for Nigerian basketball as the federation prepares to elect a new administration for the 2026–2030 period.

Ultimately, the credibility of the process will depend not on assumptions or informal discussions, but on a clear, documented, and constitutionally grounded determination of who qualifies for the international representative’s seat.

With the election only a day away, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether FIBA’s clarification arrives in time to resolve the dispute before voting concludes.
