Elite Clubs Overhaul Rosters and Coaching Staff Ahead of Highly Anticipated 2026 BAL Playoffs

Posted : 22 May 2026

The eight remaining title contenders have initiated sweeping changes to their team rosters. Following the conclusion of the regular group phase on May 3, management teams implemented strategic personnel shifts. These changes aim to maximize championship prospects ahead of the decisive knockout tournament inside the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda.

The high-scoring RSSB Tigers secured a massive frontcourt upgrade by signing Malian international center Oumar Ballo. The former high-profile American college standout will launch his professional club career on the African continent alongside seven-foot Rwandan international Osborn Shema. To accommodate these frontline additions, the tournament hosts sanctioned the departure of Congolese big man Marcel Viny-Pierrot Okouo. The Tigers will lean heavily on this newly acquired size during their quarterfinal matching against Moroccan power FUS Rabat.

FUS Rabat modified their backcourt rotation by securing playmaker Uchenna Iroegbu. The Nigerian ball-handler previously averaged a team-high 14 points per game for Nairobi City Thunder. This signing addresses a critical roster vacancy created by a severe hand injury to veteran guard Abdoulaye Harouna. Meanwhile, Angolan champions Petro de Luanda finalized deals for former NBA guard Chasson Randle and versatile power forward Raphiael Putney. The experienced American duo arrives to reinforce a veteran rotation aiming for a sixth consecutive semifinal appearance.

Libyan heavyweights Al Ahly Ly executed the most dramatic organizational overhaul by naming veteran Greek tactician Fotios Katsikaris as their new head coach. Katsikaris replaces Ahmed Soliman on the bench after a highly competitive group phase campaign. On the court, the club secured dominant Egyptian national team center Assem Marei and American guard Charlie Moore. These high-profile arrivals fill the baseline vacancies left by the sudden departures of Damion Baugh and injured Senegalese star Jean Jacques Boissy.

Tanzanian champions Dar City boosted their interior defense by recruiting former BAL Defensive Player of the Year Anas Mahmoud. The Egyptian center previously won the inaugural league title in 2021 and provides elite rim protection. Concurrently, Club Africain finalized the acquisition of Senegalese international forward Makhtar Gueye to bolster their physical presence. Former champions Al Ahly of Egypt countered by bringing back 2023 tournament Most Valuable Player Nuni Omot alongside perimeter threat Amr Zahran. Finally, ASC Ville de Dakar signed Cape Verdean national team star William Tavares to complete the extensive wave of pre-playoff transactions.
