EFCC arrest rocks Nigerian Basketball politics as Abdullahi’s NBBF ambition faces uncertainty

Posted : 14 May 2026

The arrest of Kogi State Basketball Association Chairman, Mustapha Abdullahi, by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has sent shockwaves across the Nigerian basketball community, with many stakeholders now questioning the future direction of the sport’s leadership politics.

Abdullahi, who also owns Confluence Kings Basketball Club, was reportedly taken into custody in Abuja over alleged money laundering offences said to involve more than N500 billion. He remains under investigation by the anti-graft agency as of the time of this report.

The development comes at a sensitive period for Nigerian basketball, especially with growing discussions surrounding the next leadership structure of the Nigeria Basketball Federation.

Before his arrest, Abdullahi had emerged as a strong figure within basketball administration circles, with reports suggesting that influential stakeholders were positioning him for a significant role in the federation’s future leadership.

However, the EFCC investigation has now placed those ambitions under serious pressure while also triggering renewed debate about accountability and transparency within sports administration in the country.

His rise within basketball had already attracted scrutiny from some quarters, particularly following the rapid progression of his privately-owned Confluence Kings Basketball Club into the NBBF Premier League.

Critics had questioned how the Kogi-based side secured promotion without reportedly passing through the traditional divisional structure usually required within the domestic basketball system.

The controversy surrounding Abdullahi extends beyond basketball administration.

In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu appointed him as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria after years of service at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

But in late 2025, the Network Against Corruption and Drug Trafficking submitted petitions to the Presidency, EFCC, and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over alleged irregularities within the commission.

The petition accused Abdullahi of approving multiple solar streetlight contracts allegedly linked to companies with similar addresses, registration timelines, and directors, raising concerns over possible breaches of procurement regulations.

Despite the growing public attention surrounding the matter, EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, had yet to release an official statement on the arrest at the time this report was filed.

For many stakeholders within Nigerian basketball, the incident has once again highlighted the deep connection between sports administration, politics, and power struggles, with calls increasing for stronger credibility and institutional reforms across the game.

The unfolding situation leaves the future of the Kogi State Basketball Association and Abdullahi's potential NBBF candidacy in a state of flux. As the investigation continues, the Nigerian basketball community remains on edge, awaiting further clarity on how these legal challenges will reshape the sport's administrative landscape.
