Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe admitted his timing was slightly off, but the result was perfect. The first-year guard nailed a deep jumper in the closing seconds of overtime to lift the Sixers to a thrilling 139–136 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.
Edgecombe, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, buried a 25-foot shot with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime to cap a career night of 25 points.
He later revealed he intended to release the ball closer to the buzzer but let it fly earlier than planned. Still, the shot fell, sealing the win in dramatic fashion.
The rookie was instrumental in Philadelphia’s comeback during the fourth quarter, scoring 13 points in the period while knocking down three of four attempts from beyond the arc.
His late three-pointer briefly gave the Sixers a seven-point lead in regulation, but Ja Morant led Memphis back to force overtime.
In the extra period, Edgecombe delivered the decisive blow after Morant tied the game with a driving basket, earning praise from head coach Nick Nurse for his composure and growing confidence.
