Donovan Mitchell’s Record-Tying Explosion Levels Cavaliers Series with Pistons

Posted : 12 May 2026

Donovan Mitchell delivered one of the most remarkable scoring performances in NBA playoff history, tying a league record with 39 points in the second half as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Detroit Pistons 112-103 in Game 4. The victory leveled their Eastern Conference semi-final series at 2-2.

Mitchell finished the night with 43 points overall, overcoming a slow start in which he managed just four points in the first half. His explosive second-half surge matched a record set in 1987 by former Golden State Warriors guard Eric “Sleepy” Floyd, although he narrowly missed breaking it after missing a late free throw.

Despite the near-record moment, Mitchell remained focused on the team result, stressing that the series score mattered more than personal milestones. His scoring burst included a dominant third quarter, where he helped shift momentum completely in Cleveland’s favor.

The Cavaliers’ turnaround began with a decisive 24-0 run bridging the end of the second quarter and start of the third, with Mitchell scoring 15 points during that stretch. Cleveland’s defence also tightened, forcing turnovers and converting them into fast-break points to seize control of the game.

James Harden added 24 points and 11 assists, playing a key supporting role in Cleveland’s offensive rhythm, while Evan Mobley contributed across the board with points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks in a standout all-around display.

Detroit struggled to recover after their strong first-half showing, with Cade Cunningham held to 19 points and key Pistons scorers unable to maintain their early impact. The Pistons will now look to respond in Game 5 at home as the series shifts back to Detroit.
