Don Nelson, NBA Coaching Legend and Five-Time Champion, Dies at 86

Don Nelson, one of the most influential coaches in NBA history and the league's second-winningest coach, has died at the age of 86. His family announced that he passed away peacefully on Sunday surrounded by loved ones.

Nelson finished his 31-year coaching career with 1,335 regular-season victories, a total surpassed only by Gregg Popovich. He coached the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Golden State Warriors, earning three NBA Coach of the Year awards during his career.

Although he never won an NBA championship as a coach, Nelson built an extraordinary legacy through his innovative approach to the game. His fast-paced system, widely known as "Nellie Ball," emphasized smaller, athletic lineups and exploiting mismatches, ideas that later became increasingly common throughout the league.

Nelson's influence extended beyond his coaching record. During his time with the Dallas Mavericks, he played a major role in bringing Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash to the franchise. Later, while coaching Golden State, he strongly supported the Warriors selecting Stephen Curry with the seventh pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.

His first coaching success came in Milwaukee, where he guided the Bucks to seven consecutive Central Division titles. He later became closely associated with Golden State's entertaining "Run TMC" era, featuring Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin.

As a player, Nelson spent 14 seasons in the NBA and won five championships with the Boston Celtics. Boston retired his No. 19 jersey in 1978, cementing his place among the franchise's celebrated former players.

Nelson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also a two-time NBA All-Star Game coach and guided the United States to gold at the 1994 FIBA World Championship. In 2025, he received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

Tributes poured in from across basketball following his death. NBA commissioner Adam Silver praised Nelson's fearlessness and ingenuity, while former players and colleagues highlighted the lasting impact of his ideas on the modern game.

After retiring from coaching, Nelson settled in Maui, Hawaii, where he lived on a farm and pursued agricultural and entrepreneurial interests. He also opened rental properties to families who lost their homes in the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires.
