Dolphins Defeat MFM 43–37 to Clinch Olukoya Championship Title

Posted : 16 July 2025

Dolphins Basketball Club of Lagos emerged champions of the 5th Olukoya Daniel Basketball Championship after defeating Mountain of Fire Miracles (MFM) Basketball Club 43–37 on Tuesday.

The tournament, which featured no fewer than eight competing teams, witnessed a thrilling finale at the MFM Sports Complex.

Dolphins displayed clear dominance from the start, taking control of the game early and never relinquishing their grip. They opened with a commanding 15–2 lead in the first quarter and maintained their superiority throughout the second and third quarters.

Although MFM attempted a late rally in the final quarter, they were unable to match the composure and intensity of the Dolphins side.

Team captain Damilola Olubode expressed pride in her team’s performance, stating that the victory was well-earned.

“We prepared thoroughly for this competition and stayed focused, regardless of our opponents’ strengths,” she said.

Olubode also noted that the tournament served as an excellent build-up to the upcoming Women’s League and thanked the organisers and sponsors for the opportunity.

MFM captain Ukamaka Okoh acknowledged the strength of the Dolphins team, describing them as the better side on the day.

“We gave it our best, but they were more composed and better organised. It’s painful to lose first place, but we’ll bounce back stronger,” she added.

Tournament coordinator Godwin Enakhena said the competition was created to provide a platform for players who train all year to showcase their skills.

“I’m pleased with how all five editions have gone. As the Zenith Bank Women’s League approaches, this event was perfect for final preparations,” he said.

He also explained that MFM’s defeat was in part due to a depleted squad, with some players yet to return from international duty.

Dr. Daniel Olukoya, the tournament sponsor, expressed his satisfaction with the successful organisation of the championship.

He reaffirmed MFM’s commitment to youth empowerment and pledged continued support for sports development initiatives in the country.
