Doc Rivers is no longer the head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, according to sources who confirmed his departure on Sunday. The organization is now preparing for its third coaching search in just three years as it enters a pivotal offseason.
Milwaukee is expected to continue paying Rivers his eight-figure salary for the 2026–27 season, while both sides are also discussing a possible transition into an advisory role within the franchise. The move signals a broader reset for the team after another underwhelming campaign.
Rivers posted a 97–103 record over three seasons with the Bucks, which included two first-round playoff exits and a failure to reach the postseason or play-in tournament this year. Internal reports also suggested ongoing friction between the coach and players, contributing to a strained locker-room environment.
Appointed in January 2024 after replacing Adrian Griffin, Rivers initially guided Milwaukee through a mixed finish before leading back-to-back full seasons of inconsistent results. Despite dealing with repeated injuries to key stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, the team never regained championship form.
The Bucks, who last won a title in 2021 under Mike Budenholzer, have now gone three straight seasons without a playoff series win and missed the postseason entirely this year. Rivers, a future Hall of Famer and one of the winningest coaches in NBA history, leaves Milwaukee as the franchise prepares for another major rebuild at the top.
