Doc Rivers Criticises Giannis Antetokounmpo Over Handling of Bucks Trade Exit

Posted : 06 November 2026

Former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has criticised Giannis Antetokounmpo over the way he handled his departure from the franchise, claiming the Greek superstar wanted to leave but was unwilling to publicly request a trade.

Speaking on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Rivers suggested that Antetokounmpo wanted Milwaukee's management to take responsibility for initiating the separation rather than making the decision himself. According to the former coach, the situation created uncertainty because the forward did not want to be portrayed as the person forcing his way out.

Antetokounmpo's future dominated discussions throughout the 2025-26 NBA season, despite his repeated public assurances that he remained committed to Milwaukee. The two-time NBA MVP had previously insisted that he would never demand a trade from the organisation where he won his first NBA championship in 2021.

However, reports indicated that Antetokounmpo and his agent, Alex Saratsis, had been communicating their desire for a move to the Bucks since May 2025. Their position was reportedly that separating would benefit both the player and the franchise.

Milwaukee eventually completed a major deal that sent Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. In return, the Bucks received Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round draft picks, a pick swap and a second-round selection.

Rivers also offered a candid assessment of Antetokounmpo's playing style, describing the challenge of coaching a player who relies heavily on his physical strength and ability to attack the basket. Although he praised the forward's passing skills, he argued that the superstar sometimes struggled to balance individual brilliance with the tactical demands of team basketball.

The former coach explained that Antetokounmpo frequently attempted to overpower opponents rather than consistently follow offensive instructions. He believes the forward needs to improve his understanding of structured execution, particularly during training sessions and team preparations.

Rivers added that Antetokounmpo could benefit from working under Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra, whom he considers one of the NBA's best coaches when it comes to offensive organisation and execution.

Despite the criticism, Rivers made it clear that he had a positive personal relationship with the Greek superstar, saying he appreciated him as a person while acknowledging that coaching him presented considerable challenges.

Rivers spent three seasons with Milwaukee, recording 97 wins and 103 defeats. During his tenure, the Bucks suffered two consecutive first-round playoff eliminations before missing the postseason altogether in the 2025-26 campaign, their first absence since 2015-16.

Following the disappointing season, Milwaukee confirmed that Rivers would not continue as head coach. The former NBA champion, who guided the Boston Celtics to the 2008 championship, has since moved into broadcasting, joining NBC as an NBA analyst in September.

Rivers has also indicated that he has no intention of returning to coaching, bringing an end to his latest spell on the sidelines after a challenging period in Milwaukee.
