DHQ to Host 4th CDS Unity Basketball Championship

Posted : 09 September 2025

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that the 4th Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Unity Basketball Championship (South-West Zone) will take place from September 30 to October 5, 2025, in Lagos.

The tournament, organized by the Defence Headquarters, will be staged at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

According to the DHQ, the annual championship is a key component of the CDS’ non-kinetic approach to strengthening national security. It aims to foster unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigerian youths while promoting peace, resilience, and nation-building across communities.

This year’s edition will feature 12 elite male basketball teams drawn from the South-West and neighboring states, including a military team. The program will also include veterans’ exhibition matches.

Organizers confirmed that cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates will be awarded to participating teams. In addition, special recognition awards such as Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Tournament Best will be presented.

Speaking on the tournament’s significance, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (OFR), emphasized its role in nation-building:

“The Unity Basketball Tournament is more than just a game. It is a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the values of teamwork and discipline. Through non-kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.”

The championship is expected to attract basketball enthusiasts, security stakeholders, and community leaders, making it one of the most anticipated grassroots sporting events of the year.
