Detroit Pistons inch closer to NBA's longest losing streak with 25th consecutive loss

Posted : 22 December 2023

The Detroit Pistons found themselves on the cusp of matching the NBA's longest single-season losing streak after their 25th consecutive loss, falling 119-111 to the Utah Jazz. Chants of "sell the team!" echoed from the home crowd in Detroit as the Pistons stand one defeat away from the record shared by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2010-11 and the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013-14, both enduring 26 consecutive losses. Despite the struggles, Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham expressed optimism, stating, "We're not 2-26 bad - no way are we that bad," emphasizing the team's potential for improvement.

Leading Detroit with 28 points and 10 assists, Cunningham believes the Pistons can turn things around and play a better brand of basketball. The team, which finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference last season with a 17-65 record, has won only two games this season.

Facing the Jazz, they committed 20 turnovers, resulting in 27 points for their opponents. Head coach Monty Williams expressed deep disappointment, saying, "I want to be careful with my words - this one hurts more than most of them."

Kelly Olynyk's 27 points, six assists, and four steals powered the Utah Jazz to victory, although they were missing key players. The Pistons' struggle is reminiscent of the NBA's longest losing streak, held by the Philadelphia 76ers with a 28-game run between the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

In other NBA action, Anthony Edwards led the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 118-111 win over the LA Lakers, Chet Holmgren guided the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 134-115 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, and Giannis Antetokounmpo's 37 points secured the Milwaukee Bucks' sixth straight win against the Orlando Magic.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs suffered their 21st defeat in 22 games, losing 114-95 to the Chicago Bulls, with Coby White scoring 22 points and DeMar DeRozan contributing 21.
