Dennis Schroder took charge in the final moments to secure Germany’s gold medal at the EuroBasket, scoring the game’s last six points. Isaac Bonga led all scorers for Germany with 20 points as they narrowly defeated Turkey 88-83 on Sunday. This victory marks Germany’s first EuroBasket title since 1993, coming just two years after the team, with much of the same core roster, captured the 2023 World Cup.
“We never shy away from the big moments… Everybody is so confident,” Schroder said. “Just big-time plays from big-time character people.” Franz Wagner contributed 18 points, while Schroder recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 assists, helping Germany finish the tournament undefeated at 9-0.
The gold medal game was tightly contested, featuring 15 lead changes and 11 ties. The decisive moment came when Schroder drove for a basket to give Germany the lead with 1:15 remaining, followed by a crucial jumper with 18.7 seconds left. After Turkey’s Alperen Sengun missed a potential game-tying three-pointer, Schroder sealed the win with two free throws.
Turkey’s Sengun scored 28 points, with Cedi Osman adding 23 and Shane Larkin contributing 13 points, nine assists, and six rebounds. Schroder, named EuroBasket MVP, reflected on the achievement: “To be a World Cup winner and a European champion, that's big time.”
Meanwhile, in the bronze medal matchup, Giannis Antetokounmpo led Greece to a 92-89 victory over Finland, scoring 30 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. This marked Greece’s first EuroBasket medal since earning bronze in 2009 and their sixth podium finish overall. Antetokounmpo, a past NBA champion and MVP, called it one of the greatest accomplishments of his career. “There’s no feeling like representing your national team and representing 12 million people that breathe and live this national team,” he said.
Finland’s Lauri Markkanen recorded 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Elias Valtonen missed a chance to tie the game with three free throws in the closing seconds. Greece led throughout much of the game, at one point holding a 17-point advantage, and managed to hold off Finland’s late rally, with Antetokounmpo securing the final victory with free throws.
Earlier in the semifinals, Turkey defeated Greece, while Germany overcame Finland. Germany ultimately edged out Turkey later that Sunday to claim the gold medal.
