Philadelphia 76ers Part Ways With Daryl Morey, Retain Nick Nurse as Head Coach

The Philadelphia 76ers have announced the departure of president of basketball operations Daryl Morey, while confirming that head coach Nick Nurse will remain in charge of the team. The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by managing partner Josh Harris, who described the move as a “fresh start” for the franchise.

Harris expressed appreciation for Morey’s contributions over six seasons, noting that the organisation reached the conclusion after internal discussions that a change in leadership was necessary. Despite periods of regular-season success, the team failed to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs during Morey’s tenure.

To oversee the transition, Bob Myers, president of sports at Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment and former Golden State Warriors executive, will lead the search for a new head of basketball operations. Myers will also manage the franchise’s basketball operations on an interim basis while evaluating the existing staff and planning future structural changes.

In his statement, Myers stressed the importance of identifying the right long-term leader for the franchise and confirmed that the process to rebuild the front office would begin immediately. He added that Philadelphia remains an attractive destination for top basketball talent and pledged a thorough evaluation of the organisation.

Morey’s tenure included several high-profile moves, including acquiring James Harden and signing star players such as Joel Embiid and Paul George to major contracts. However, injuries and inconsistency limited the team’s ability to compete at the highest level, with Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey rarely sharing the court together over the past two seasons.

The team also experienced mixed results in roster development and trades, including the departure of young guard Jared McCain and the selection of VJ Edgecombe in the 2025 NBA Draft. Despite occasional playoff appearances, the 76ers struggled to establish sustained postseason success.

Nick Nurse’s tenure has also been challenging, with a 116–130 record over three seasons. However, he recently guided Philadelphia through a notable playoff run that included a comeback series win before elimination in the conference semifinals.

Ownership acknowledged fan frustration, admitting the franchise has not met expectations and pledging a more stable direction moving forward under new leadership.
