D’Tigress Thank Tinubu as Presidential Rewards Hit Players’ Accounts

Players and officials of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after receiving the outstanding financial rewards promised following their historic 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket triumph.

The payments represent the final part of the Presidential Rewards announced for the team after their successful campaign in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. The development brings the financial aspect of the President’s pledge to the players and officials to a close.

The release of the funds followed efforts by the National Sports Commission to complete the payment process. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko held discussions with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Prof. Taiwo Oyedele, as part of the arrangements to settle the outstanding rewards.

According to BSN Sports, the financial rewards were credited to the accounts of D’Tigress players and officials within three days of the conclusion of the arrangements. Members of the Super Falcons also received the financial rewards promised to them by the President.

D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo thanked Tinubu on behalf of the team. She praised the President for fulfilling his commitments after Nigeria's successful AfroBasket campaign.

Okonkwo said the team had now received the different rewards promised by the President, including houses, national honours and financial payments. She described the gesture as an important demonstration of support for Nigerian athletes.

The captain also thanked the First Lady, Shehu Dikko and NSC Director General Bukola Olopade for their roles in the process. The Nigeria Basketball Federation and its president, Musa Kida, were also acknowledged for their support.

The financial payments come as D’Tigress continue to dominate women's basketball in Africa. Nigeria defeated Mali 78-64 in the 2025 AfroBasket final in Abidjan to retain the continental crown.

The victory gave Nigeria a record-extending seventh Women's AfroBasket title. It also extended the team's unbeaten run in the competition to 29 games and secured a fifth consecutive championship.

D’Tigress' continued success has made them one of Nigeria's most successful national sports teams. Their latest continental triumph further strengthened that status and increased expectations surrounding the team's preparation for future international competitions.

The fulfillment of the Presidential Rewards also comes at a time when athlete welfare and timely payment of sporting incentives remain important issues in Nigerian sports. For D’Tigress, the arrival of the outstanding funds provides another sign of recognition for their historic achievements on the continental stage.
