D’Tigress retain African supremacy despite slide in FIBA World Cup rankings

Nigeria’s D’Tigress may have slipped two places in the latest FIBA Women’s World Cup Power Rankings, but the continental champions remain firmly among the world’s leading basketball nations.

D’Tigress moved from eighth to 10th in the latest assessment released ahead of the FIBA Women’s World Cup, but retained their position as the only African team in the top 10.

The ranking places Nigeria behind Italy, who climbed into ninth position, while Japan occupy eighth and Germany seventh.

The United States continue to set the pace at the summit, with France and Spain completing the top three. Belgium are fourth, followed by Australia, China and Germany.

Although the two-place drop represents a setback in the rankings, D’Tigress’ presence among the leading contenders underlines the remarkable progress made by Nigerian women’s basketball on the international stage.

Nigeria’s position is particularly significant given the strength and depth of women’s basketball across the competing nations, with D’Tigress continuing to carry Africa’s hopes among the global elite.

The latest ranking is also an indication of the increasingly competitive field awaiting Nigeria at the World Cup, where the team will need to match its continental dominance with consistent performances against the world’s best.
