Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have concluded their WNBA U.S. tour with valuable lessons and increased exposure despite a series of defeats against top American opposition.
The Nigerian side wrapped up the friendly tournament on Monday with a 105-57 loss to WNBA outfit Indiana Fever, capping off a demanding three-game stretch designed to sharpen the team ahead of the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany.
Earlier in the tour, D’Tigress fell 89-63 to Los Angeles Sparks on April 25 before delivering an improved performance in an 88-79 defeat against Minnesota Lynx on April 27.
President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engr. Musa Kida, described the exercise as a strategic developmental initiative rather than a results-driven campaign.
According to Kida, the tour offered a rare opportunity for the players—particularly younger members of the squad—to gain firsthand experience against elite-level opposition.
“The WNBA Tour was primarily organised to expose our players to the kind of intensity, structure, and quality they will face at the global stage,” Kida said.
“It was never solely about winning games, but about testing the players, evaluating combinations, and preparing the team mentally and tactically for future competitions.”
The 21-player squad featured a blend of experienced and emerging talents, with only seven players retained from the team that successfully defended Nigeria’s Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025.
Kida noted that the federation remains focused on building a sustainable future for the team by expanding the talent pool and integrating new players into the national setup.
“Our focus goes beyond immediate outcomes. This is about long-term growth, continuity, and preparing the next generation to sustain D’Tigress’ dominance in Africa and competitiveness globally,” he added.
D’Tigress are expected to continue preparations in the coming weeks as they intensify their build-up to the World Cup campaign.
The U.S. tour marks a significant milestone in the team's tactical evolution, highlighting areas for improvement before they head to Germany. By prioritizing high-level competition, the NBBF ensures that D'Tigress remains battle-hardened and ready to challenge the world's best on the international stage.
