It will be a familiar rivalry under the lights at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Thursday night, as defending champions Nigeria’s D’Tigress face the Lionesses of Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket.
D’Tigress waited late into Wednesday night to learn their quarter-final opponent after Cameroon convincingly defeated Angola 85–64, underlining Angola’s continued struggles in women’s basketball.
The Nigerian team heads into today’s game well-rested and energized after enjoying a two-day break, thanks to finishing first in their group.
Coach Rene Wakama’s side has been boosted by the return of experienced shooting guard Sarah Ogoke, who missed the team’s previous two matches in the tournament. Ogoke, a key figure in Nigeria’s last four Afrobasket title-winning squads, is expected to bring her leadership and experience to bear in the knockout clash.
Coach Wakama has charged his players to elevate their performance and expressed confidence that the team is regaining its rhythm at the right time.
“This is the business end of the tournament. As a team, we know what is at stake, and we’re staying focused on our goals game by game,” Wakama said.
“Afrobasket is getting tougher, which reflects the growing standard of women’s basketball on the continent. Today’s game against Cameroon will be no different.”
Thursday promises to be action-packed at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, with all four quarter-final matches on the schedule. Uganda will open the day’s action against debutants South Sudan, who stunned Egypt in the playoff round. This will be followed by Mali vs. Mozambique, hosts Ivory Coast vs. Senegal, and finally, Nigeria vs. Cameroon at 10 PM Nigerian time.
