Nigeria’s D’Tigress delivered a commanding performance to defeat Cameroon and secure a place in the semifinals of the 2025 Afrobasket on Thursday night in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
The Nigerian team dominated from the outset, winning the first quarter 21-9. Although Cameroon matched Nigeria 20-20 in the second quarter, the reigning African champions raised their intensity in the third, outscoring the Lionesses 25-2 in a masterclass display of dominance. By the fourth quarter, the Nigerian crowd was in full celebration mode as the team edged the final period 17-16, sealing a 36-point victory.
It was a comprehensive team effort marked by sharp shooting and disciplined defense. Captain Amy Okonkwo led the charge with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist, while Anamosi Nichole contributed 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
Now just two games away from a historic fifth consecutive Afrobasket title, Nigeria will face Senegal in Saturday’s semifinal—a rematch of the 2023 final in Rwanda. Head coach Rena Wakama acknowledged Cameroon’s first-half resistance but praised her team's explosive third-quarter response.
"Credit to Cameroon because they refused to back down in the first half, but I told the girls at halftime to come out and dominate—and they did," said Wakama. "Saturday’s game will be emotional and physical, but we know our mission and we’re staying focused."
All four semifinalists have secured a place in the qualifying tournament for the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Germany. The Afrobasket champion will earn an automatic ticket to the global event.
