D’Tigress Crush Cameroon 75-45 to Reach U18 AfroBasket Semi-Finals

Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress stormed into the semi-finals of the 2026 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket after defeating Cameroon 75-45 in Abidjan on Wednesday. The victory was a strong response to Nigeria’s narrow 75-74 overtime loss to Cameroon earlier in the group stage.

Peter Oluwaseun Akindele’s side controlled the contest from the opening minutes. Nigeria led 20-8 after the first quarter before producing an even stronger second period.

The Junior D’Tigress outscored Cameroon 28-12 in the second quarter. That gave Nigeria a commanding 48-20 lead at halftime and placed them firmly in control of the quarter-final.

Cameroon responded after the break and won the third quarter 19-15. Nigeria remained composed, however, and protected its sizeable advantage.

The Nigerian defence then closed out the game strongly. Cameroon managed only six points in the final quarter as Nigeria completed a 30-point victory.

Nigeria’s defensive pressure was a major factor in the result. The team forced 31 turnovers and converted those mistakes into 28 points, while also recording 25 assists compared with Cameroon’s 14.

The Junior D’Tigress shot 35.5 percent from the field and made 41.7 percent of their three-point attempts. They also converted 11 of 17 free throws during the game.

Favour Joy Anari led Nigeria with 16 points. She also produced eight assists, three rebounds and five steals in an impressive all-round performance.

Zainab Adelaja added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Oluwatobiloba Owolabi contributed 11 points and four assists. Precious Grace Aladelua completed a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Edore Pela also made an impact with seven points and five assists as Nigeria showed strong depth across the court.

The result sends Nigeria into the last four of the continental competition. The Junior D’Tigress will face either hosts Côte d’Ivoire or Tunisia in the semi-finals.

Nigeria entered the tournament with strong pedigree after finishing runners-up in the 2024 edition. FIBA records show that the top two teams at the 2026 U18 Women’s AfroBasket will qualify for the 2027 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in China.
