D'Tigers Unveil 12-Man Roster For 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers

Posted : 29 June 2026

The Nigeria Basketball Federation has officially released the final 12-man roster for the critical third window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers. The highly anticipated qualifying round is scheduled to tip off on July 2 in Luanda, Angola, where Nigeria faces a high-stakes campaign to revive its global tournament hopes.

This upcoming international window marks the official debut of newly appointed head coach David Fizdale on the Nigerian bench. The experienced American tactician, who previously served as head coach for the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks in the NBA, took over the senior men's national team with a clear mandate to restructure the program.

Fizdale inherits a determined squad currently occupying third place in Group C with four points, sitting behind regional rivals Guinea and Tunisia. The former African champions managed only a single victory during their opening three qualification matches held in Tunisia last November, leaving them under severe pressure to perform.

A major highlight of the newly unveiled roster is the return of crucial veteran leadership to the national team structure. Forward Chimezie Metu makes his return alongside experienced guards Stan Okoye, Caleb Agada, Ike Iroegbu, and Uche Iroegbu to provide vital depth and top-tier versatility.

The balanced selection also features reliable international stars like Wesley Iwundu, Michael Eric, and Daniel Utomi to anchor the frontcourt. Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, Christian Mekowulu, Martins Igbanu, and Paul Dibal complete the list, offering strong defensive options and athletic depth.

Fizdale will be supported on the bench by a star-studded assistant coaching staff including former NBA player Ekpe Udoh and David Vanterpool. The D'Tigers are scheduled to open their crucial competitive campaign against Tunisia on July 2, followed by intensive match-ups against Guinea and Rwanda.
