D’Tigers Seek Winning Start Against Cameroon in FIBA World Cup Qualifying Window

Nigeria’s D’Tigers will begin their third-window campaign in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 qualifiers with a crucial Group E clash against Cameroon on Thursday in Rades, Tunisia.

The Nigerians enter the window with renewed confidence after recovering from a difficult opening phase of the qualifiers to put together a four-game winning run.

Their immediate challenge, however, is a Cameroon side expected to provide a physical test, with veteran guard Stan Okoye warning his teammates that they must be prepared to adapt to contrasting styles throughout the window.

“Cameroon [are] very strong, bruisers, good guard play, and have a really nice shooter. Very different teams,” Okoye told FIBA Media.

Nigeria will have little time to recover after the Cameroon encounter, as they face group leaders South Sudan on Friday before completing their third-window schedule against bottom-placed Cape Verde.

Okoye described South Sudan as a tall, athletic and highly talented team with an American-influenced style, while noting that Cape Verde would present another different challenge, particularly if veteran star Walter Tavares features.

“We have to show a different face of ourselves each day, but understand that we have to be our best version,” he said.

D’Tigers’ campaign got off to a disappointing start in the first window, when they suffered consecutive defeats to Tunisia and Guinea. A victory over Rwanda in their final game, however, kept their hopes of reaching the second phase alive.

Nigeria subsequently produced a much-improved display in the second window, edging Tunisia and Guinea in closely fought encounters before comfortably defeating Rwanda to establish a four-game winning streak.

Okoye acknowledged that the team struggled during the opening window, attributing the setbacks partly to an incomplete squad and inadequate preparation.

“Obviously, in any competition that goes over the course of two years, you know there’s going to be ups and downs. You know, we had a very rough start; we didn’t have our full-strength squad. Also, we didn’t have the proper preparation,” he said.

Despite the turnaround, the experienced guard has urged the team to resist the temptation of looking too far ahead and concentrate on each possession.

“We have to stay in the moment. You know, from the jump ball, from every possession, just focus on the moment and take care of it game by game,” Okoye said.

The Cameroon-Nigeria encounter is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. Nigerian time in Rades.

With the qualification race reaching a critical stage, D’Tigers will be hoping to maintain their momentum and strengthen their position in the race for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

The top two teams from Groups E and F, alongside the best third-placed team after the qualifying series concludes next March, will earn Africa’s berths at the World Cup.
