Nigeria's senior men's basketball team, D'Tigers, will begin their quest for a place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup with three crucial fixtures against Cameroon, South Sudan, and Cabo Verde in the opening qualifying window later this August.
Drawn in a competitive Group E, Nigeria will also battle Tunisia and Guinea as six nations vie for qualification to the global showpiece.
D'Tigers will open their campaign against regional rivals Cameroon on Aug. 27 before taking on South Sudan a day later. They will conclude the first qualifying window on Aug. 30 against Cabo Verde in what promises to be their toughest opening challenge.
The remaining Group E fixtures will see Guinea face South Sudan and Tunisia take on Cabo Verde on the opening day. On Aug. 28, Cameroon will meet Tunisia, while Cabo Verde battles Guinea. The first qualifying window will conclude with Guinea taking on Cameroon and Tunisia facing South Sudan.
Nigeria heads into the qualifiers buoyed by a positive head-to-head record against two of their opening opponents. D'Tigers have won three of their last four meetings with Cameroon and have maintained a perfect record against South Sudan, winning both previous encounters.
Cabo Verde, however, has proved to be a difficult opponent in recent years. Nigeria has managed just one victory in six previous meetings, making the final game of the opening window a key test of the team's ambitions.
With qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup on the line, D'Tigers will be looking to make the most of their favourable record against Cameroon and South Sudan before attempting to improve their fortunes against Cabo Verde in the race for a place at the tournament.
A strong performance in the opening qualifying window would provide Nigeria with valuable momentum as the team pursues a return to the FIBA Basketball World Cup and aims to establish itself among the continent's leading basketball nations.
