D'Tigers Edge Tunisia 84-81 to Open FIBA World Cup Qualifiers With Vital Victory

Posted : 03 July 2026

Nigeria's senior men's basketball team, D'Tigers, opened the decisive window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers with a hard-fought 84-81 victory over Tunisia in Luanda, Angola, on Thursday. The result marked a successful competitive debut for head coach David Fizdale and strengthened Nigeria's hopes of reaching the next qualification stage.

The contest was closely fought from the opening tip, with both teams matching each other throughout the game. Nigeria edged the first quarter 23-21 before Tunisia responded by taking the second period 23-20, leaving the scores level at halftime. D'Tigers regained control after the break by winning the third quarter 21-19 and then held off a late Tunisian push with a 20-18 fourth-quarter advantage.

Chimezie Metu and Ike Iroegbu led Nigeria's offense with 17 points each. Wes Iwundu added 14 points, while Uche Iroegbu contributed 13 in another balanced attacking display. Their experience proved decisive as Nigeria executed key plays in the closing stages to protect the narrow lead.

The victory also served as revenge for Nigeria after Tunisia defeated D'Tigers 88-78 in overtime during an earlier qualifying window. It continues Nigeria's recent strong record against the North Africans in Luanda, where they also claimed a convincing win during the 2025 AfroBasket.

Nigeria entered the final qualifying window knowing every result would be crucial in the race for a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar. The opening win gives D'Tigers valuable momentum ahead of their remaining Group C fixtures against Guinea and Rwanda, with victories in those games expected to significantly improve their chances of progressing.

The performance also highlighted the quality within Nigeria's roster, which blends experienced internationals with overseas-based professionals. Under Fizdale's leadership, D'Tigers showed resilience in difficult moments and remained composed whenever Tunisia threatened to seize control of the contest.

Nigeria will now shift focus to Friday's meeting with Guinea before wrapping up the qualification window against Rwanda on Sunday. Another positive run would move the team closer to securing a place in the next phase of the African qualifiers and keep alive its ambition of returning to the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
