D'Tigers Complete Perfect Qualifying Window, Seal Second-Round Spot

Nigeria's senior men's basketball team, D'Tigers, booked a place in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after completing an unbeaten run in the third qualifying window with a dominant 106-62 victory over Rwanda in Luanda, Angola.

The convincing win on Sunday capped an impressive turnaround for Nigeria, who recovered from a difficult start to the qualification campaign by winning all three matches in Angola.

D'Tigers had earlier edged Guinea 80-79 before defeating Tunisia 84-81, with the victory over Rwanda sealing a perfect 3-0 record in the window and reviving their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

Despite the flawless outing, the team's assistant coach, David Vanterpool, insisted that qualification for the next round was only a step towards the bigger objective.

"Our goal was to come here and win three games. The job is not done. We still have a lot of work to do, and we'll continue preparing this team," Vanterpool told FIBA.

Veteran forward Stan Okoye described the unbeaten run as a major confidence boost but stressed that the players remained focused on completing the qualification journey.

"Going home 3-0 feels amazing, but the job is not done. Representing Nigeria means the world to me, and every opportunity to wear this jersey is a blessing," Okoye said.

Nigeria will now shift attention to the second round of the African qualifiers as they continue their quest to secure a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Qatar.

The unbeaten run in Luanda has renewed confidence within the D'Tigers camp as they prepare for the next phase of the qualifiers. Nigeria will aim to build on this momentum and maintain their winning form in pursuit of a place at the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
