Coal City Blazers Basketball Club of Enugu delivered one of the standout results of the ongoing Nigeria Basketball Premier League after defeating experienced side Kwara Falcons 66-60 in a thrilling encounter that has further energized basketball followers across the South East.

The hard-earned victory highlighted the growing competitiveness of the youthful Enugu-based side, who showed composure and resilience against one of Nigeria’s traditional basketball powerhouses.

The result has continued to attract praise from basketball stakeholders and enthusiasts across the region, many describing it as another sign of the steady rise of basketball development in the South East.

South East representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Mr. Ugo Udezue, praised the team’s fighting spirit and noted that such performances would encourage more investment and attention toward the game in the region.

Udezue, a respected stakeholder working with the federation led by Engineer Musa Kida, reaffirmed his commitment to promoting basketball development and creating stronger opportunities for young talents in the South East.

Reactions also poured in from supporters and stakeholders across different states. In Imo State, Innocent Igwe described the victory as a major morale booster for grassroots basketball growth, while Chinedu Opara applauded the discipline and determination shown by the players throughout the contest.

From Anambra State, Ekena Okereke and Osundu Mike commended Coal City Blazers for overcoming one of the country’s most established teams, adding that the performance reflects the improving quality of basketball talents emerging from the region.

Coal City Blazers head coach, Coach Chiedozie Nwoye, revealed that the players were highly motivated to secure victory as a birthday gift for him.

Nwoye, a former Nigerian international and member of the national team coaching setup, expressed satisfaction with the progress of the squad and maintained confidence that the team would continue to improve as the league progresses.

The victory leaves Coal City Blazers with two wins and two losses in the current campaign as they continue preparations ahead of the return leg scheduled to hold in Enugu.

Meanwhile, attention is gradually shifting toward the South East Basketball Tournament, Ebonyi 2026, which is expected to take place after the conclusion of the ongoing league season.

The competition, backed by Afasports Kits Manufacturing Company, is aimed at deepening grassroots basketball development while creating opportunities for youth empowerment and economic growth within the region.

This significant victory marks a turning point for the Enugu-based squad as they balance their league standings and build momentum. The widespread praise from regional stakeholders underlines the broader impact of their success on grassroots sports development. With strong administrative backing and upcoming regional tournaments, the future of basketball in the South East looks incredibly promising.
