Club Africain and FUS Rabat Dominate Opening Days of 2026 Sahara Conference

Posted : 28 April 2026

The 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference has delivered high-stakes drama through its opening three gamedays at the Moulay Abdellah Arena. Host team FUS Rabat and Tunisia’s Club Africain have emerged as the early pace-setters. Both teams remain undefeated with 2-0 records as the competition intensifies in Morocco. The atmosphere in Rabat has been electric, fueled by passionate local supporters and traveling Tunisian fans known as Les Clubistes.

One of the most significant milestones of the tournament occurred when Abdoulaye Harouna made history. The FUS Rabat shooting guard became the first player in BAL history to surpass the 500-point mark. Harouna entered the conference trailing Chris Crawford in all-time scoring but quickly seized the top spot. He currently leads the league with 532 career points across 31 games played.

The most dramatic moment on the court so far came during the clash between Al Ahly and Club Africain. Al Ahly appeared to have the game secured with a seven-point lead and only 15 seconds remaining on the clock. However, Club Africain executed a stunning 8-0 scoring run in the closing moments. Oussama Marnaoui, a former champion with US Monastir, drained a decisive three-pointer to seal a 69-68 victory.

Statistically, the conference has seen elite individual efforts despite a lack of double-double performances. Omar Abada of Club Africain is currently leading the scoring charts with an average of 23 points per game. He also leads the conference in assists, averaging 7.0 per outing. On the defensive end, Peter Olisemeka of the Maktown Flyers has been dominant on the glass. He is currently averaging a tournament-high 12 rebounds per game.

While FUS Rabat and Club Africain enjoy perfect starts, other teams are fighting to stay in playoff contention. ASC Ville de Dakar and JCA Kings are still searching for their first victories of the campaign. Meanwhile, defending champions Al Ahly and the Maktown Flyers sit in the middle of the pack with one win each. History suggests a slow start can be overcome, much like Al Ahly Libya’s comeback in the previous Kalahari Conference. The Sahara Conference action is scheduled to continue until the final games on May 3.
