Cleveland Cavaliers vs Detroit Pistons: NBA Rules No-Foul Call on Jarrett Allen Was Correct in Game 5

Posted : 15 May 2026

The NBA has confirmed that officials made the correct decision in not calling a foul on Jarrett Allen during the closing moments of Game 5 between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Detroit Pistons.

The incident occurred in the final seconds of regulation when Allen made contact with Pistons guard Ausar Thompson as both players chased a loose ball. The no-call sparked immediate debate on the court and later criticism from Detroit head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who argued that Allen had tripped Thompson during the play.

However, the NBA’s official Last Two Minutes Report sided with the referees’ original ruling. It stated that both players legally moved toward the same spot while contesting the loose ball, and that the contact was marginal and caused both players to lose balance without possession being established.

Had a foul been called, Thompson would have gone to the free-throw line with the game tied late in regulation. Instead, the contest continued into overtime, where Cleveland secured a 117-113 victory to take a 3-2 series lead.

Following the game, crew chief Tony Brothers explained that officials viewed the contact as incidental during a live ball situation, with neither player in control of possession. He also confirmed that the league office would review the play as part of its standard process.

With the win, Cleveland earned its first road victory of the postseason and moved one step closer to advancing. The Cavaliers now return home for Game 6, where a win would send them into the Eastern Conference Finals against the New York Knicks.
