CJ McCollum Stars as Hawks Steal Game 2 Thriller Over Knicks at Madison Square Garden

Posted : 21 April 2026

CJ McCollum delivered a standout performance at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, guiding the Atlanta Hawks to a dramatic 107–106 win over the New York Knicks in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series. The victory levels the series at 1–1 after McCollum’s late-game brilliance silenced the home crowd.

The veteran guard scored 32 points and added six assists, repeatedly keeping Atlanta within reach when the Knicks threatened to take control. Despite New York building a double-digit lead in the third quarter, McCollum’s composure and shot-making kept the Hawks alive heading into a tense fourth quarter.

In the closing moments, McCollum took over completely, scoring crucial baskets in the final two minutes, including a confident step-back jumper over OG Anunoby with just 34 seconds remaining to give Atlanta the lead. His clutch plays instantly made him the focal point of the Madison Square Garden crowd, which turned hostile as tensions rose on the court.

The game featured heated exchanges, including a verbal confrontation with Knicks guard Jose Alvarado that led to offsetting technical fouls, further intensifying the playoff atmosphere. McCollum, however, downplayed the villain narrative, insisting the reaction from fans was more a sign of respect than hostility.

Despite missing two late free throws that briefly opened the door for New York, McCollum’s overall impact defined the night. The Knicks had one final opportunity, but a missed fadeaway attempt by Mikal Bridges sealed the result in Atlanta’s favor.

The Knicks, led by Jalen Brunson and strong interior performances from Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson, struggled to maintain offensive rhythm in the final quarter as the Hawks shot efficiently to complete the comeback.

The series now shifts to Atlanta for Game 3, with momentum firmly balanced after two tightly contested matchups.
