The Atlanta Hawks have found a new go-to player in crunch time, with veteran guard CJ McCollum stepping into the spotlight following the departure of former franchise star Trae Young. McCollum once again proved decisive, hitting a late mid-range jumper to secure a 109-108 win over the New York Knicks in Game 3.
The victory gave Atlanta a 2-1 lead in their playoff series, continuing a strong postseason run that has been fuelled by McCollum’s leadership and scoring ability. The 34-year-old has quickly become the focal point of the Hawks’ offense since joining in a midseason trade that reshaped the roster.
McCollum described his approach as calm and experienced, saying he embraces both success and failure after a long career in the league. His confidence has carried over into the playoffs, where he has repeatedly delivered in key moments for his new team.
Head coach Quin Snyder praised McCollum’s composure, noting that the team has full trust in his ability to make decisive plays late in games. Snyder was not surprised by the game-winning shot, highlighting McCollum’s consistency under pressure.
McCollum was instrumental in Game 2 as well, scoring 32 points to help Atlanta secure a win at Madison Square Garden. In Game 3, he added 23 points despite tighter defensive attention in the second half.
Support also came from across the roster, with Jalen Johnson contributing 24 points, while Dyson Daniels dominated the boards. Midseason addition Jonathan Kuminga also made a major impact off the bench, including a crucial late steal to help preserve the win.
Kuminga, who has grown into his role during the postseason, said team chemistry has improved steadily since the roster changes. He credited coaching guidance and growing trust among teammates for his strong playoff performances.
With the series shifting momentum, McCollum has now become the clear leader of Atlanta’s new era, taking on the clutch role once associated with Trae Young and guiding the Hawks deeper into the postseason.
