The 2025 CDS Democracy Day Basketball Championship officially tipped off at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, with a vibrant opening ceremony that featured a parade of all 16 participating teams.
The second edition of the championship was declared open by the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa, OFR. In his remarks, he emphasized that the primary aim of the tournament is to foster stronger civil-military relations and promote unity across the country.
General Musa also highlighted the importance of youth development through sports, stating that the competition serves as a platform to identify young basketball talents and nurture them to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
“The theme of the championship, Encouraging Grassroot Basketball Talents, captures our vision to discover and develop youth potential while promoting mutual respect and cooperation between civilians and the military,” he noted.
Team Nasarawa kicked off their campaign with a commanding 32–28 win over Gilali of Kaduna. More matches are scheduled to continue on Monday, with other teams set to begin their quests for the title.
The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including General CG Musa, OFR; Air Commodore Dola, SGOH (Rtd); members of the 38 RC; the Director of Sports at the FCT Sports Council; HRH Eke Ifeanyi; Mr. Anthony, Chairman of the FCT Basketball Caretaker Committee; as well as top military officials from the Defence Headquarters.
The 2025 CDS Democracy Day Basketball Championship will run through Wednesday, June 18, 2025, and is expected to showcase the talents and determination of young players from across Nigeria.
