Cavaliers Set to Retain Kenny Atkinson After Conference Finals Run

Posted : 27 May 2026

Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to retain head coach Kenny Atkinson for next season after guiding the franchise to its deepest playoff run in years.

According to reports, support for Atkinson remains strong within the organization despite Cleveland’s disappointing sweep against the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals. The Cavaliers reached the conference finals for the first time since 2018 and achieved their best postseason result without LeBron James on the roster since 1992.

Star guard Donovan Mitchell publicly defended Atkinson following the team’s elimination, dismissing criticism directed at the coach after the series defeat.

Mitchell praised Atkinson’s impact on the team’s progress, pointing out that Cleveland had taken a major step forward under his leadership after several seasons of playoff disappointment.

Veteran guard James Harden also backed the coach, describing Atkinson as a strong players’ coach who quickly helped integrate him into the team after his arrival during the season.

Atkinson, who signed a five-year contract with Cleveland in 2024, has compiled an impressive regular-season record during his first two years with the franchise. After winning 64 games in his debut season and earning Coach of the Year honours, the Cavaliers pushed even further this year by advancing beyond the second round for the first time in the current era.

Despite the progress, Cleveland’s heavy defeat to the Knicks exposed weaknesses that could lead to roster changes during the offseason. Team owner Dan Gilbert hinted at potential adjustments after stating publicly that the franchise still had significant work to do before becoming a championship contender.

Atkinson acknowledged there would be decisions ahead regarding the roster but expressed confidence in the organization’s direction and collaboration between the coaching staff and front office.

The Cavaliers had previously dismissed former coach J. B. Bickerstaff after consecutive second-round exits, bringing in Atkinson with the goal of taking the team deeper into the playoffs.

Although Cleveland’s season ended in frustration after losing every game of the conference finals by double digits, the organization still views the campaign as progress after overcoming previous playoff barriers.

Atkinson also faced criticism during the series after Cleveland squandered a 22-point lead in Game 1 and comments referencing analytical performance metrics drew ridicule online. However, support from players and management appears to have strengthened his position heading into next season.
