Cavaliers’ James Harden Suffers Thumb Fracture, Will Play Through Injury

Posted : 26 February 2026

Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden sustained a nondisplaced fracture in his right thumb during Tuesday night’s victory over the New York Knicks, the team confirmed Wednesday. Following X-rays, Harden was ruled out for Wednesday’s 118–116 loss at Milwaukee, despite initially being listed as questionable.

Harden has consulted a hand specialist and will not require surgery. The team confirmed he will continue treatment and undergo further evaluation, with the star guard planning to play through the injury. Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson noted that it is too early to determine the full impact of the injury or pinpoint the exact moment it occurred.

During Wednesday’s game, Harden’s thumb was wrapped for protection. With teammates Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley also sidelined, Cleveland relied on its depth to remain competitive. Cavs center Jarrett Allen remarked on Harden’s toughness, comparing the injury to his own past experiences and praising Harden’s determination to keep playing.

Harden joined the Cavaliers on February 3 after being traded from the LA Clippers. In seven games with Cleveland, he has averaged 18.9 points, eight assists, and 4.6 rebounds. Earlier in the season with the Clippers, he averaged 25.1 points, 8.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds over 44 appearances.

Cleveland, currently 37–23, has won eight of its last ten games and sits fourth in the Eastern Conference, aiming to maintain momentum despite Harden’s injury.
