Cavaliers Dominate Pistons to Reach First Eastern Conference Finals Since 2018

Posted : 18 May 2026

The Cleveland Cavaliers delivered a dominant performance on Sunday, overpowering the Detroit Pistons 125-94 in a decisive Game 7 to book their place in the NBA Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.

Led by 26 points from Donovan Mitchell, Cleveland took control early in the contest and never looked back. Strong contributions also came from Sam Merrill and Jarrett Allen, who added 23 points each, while Evan Mobley finished with 21 as the Cavaliers’ balanced attack overwhelmed their opponents.

Despite losing the first two games of the series, Cleveland recovered impressively to complete a 4-3 series comeback. They built a commanding 20-point lead in the first half at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit before sealing a comfortable victory in front of a stunned home crowd.

Detroit, who had finished the regular season with a strong 60-22 record, struggled to match Cleveland’s intensity in the decisive game. Their top scorer was Daniss Jenkins with 17 points, as the team fell short of reaching the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2005.

The Cavaliers now advance to face the third-seeded New York Knicks in the conference finals, with Game 1 scheduled at Madison Square Garden. The winner of that series will move on to face either the Oklahoma City Thunder or San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals.

After the win, Mitchell praised his team’s resilience but emphasized the need for greater consistency moving forward, noting that Cleveland had to respond under pressure rather than wait for elimination before raising their level.

Meanwhile, in league awards news, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named NBA Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, becoming the first guard since Stephen Curry to achieve the feat. He led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 64-18 regular-season record, averaging 31.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.3 rebounds across 68 games.
