Cameroon Selected to Host Third Window of 2027 FIBA World Cup African Qualifiers

Posted : 01 May 2026

The FIBA Africa Regional Office has officially designated Cameroon as one of the host nations for the third window of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers. This decision was reached during a pivotal board meeting held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on April 15, 2026. The upcoming round of fixtures is set to take place from July 2 to July 5, 2026, across three different African nations.

Cameroon will specifically host the Group A matches at the Japoma Stadium gymnasium in Douala. This group features a highly competitive lineup including Cape Verde, Libya, and the globally recognized South Sudan. The "Indomitable Lions" of basketball currently sit in a strong position within the group after securing vital wins during the opening window held in Tunisia last November.

Senegal has been selected to organize the Group B fixtures in Dakar. This pool includes powerhouses such as Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Madagascar. Meanwhile, Angola will serve as the hub for Groups C and D, welcoming teams like Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, and Mali. These four-day tournaments are critical as they determine which teams will advance to the second round of the global qualification series.

The qualification process for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar is becoming increasingly intense. The top three teams from each of the four groups will progress to the next phase, where they will be divided into two groups of six. Only five African nations will eventually secure a ticket to the 32-team tournament in Qatar.

Cameroon's basketball federation expressed great enthusiasm regarding the hosting rights. Officials believe that playing on home soil will provide the Indomitable Lions with the necessary momentum to finish at the top of Group A. Following the conclusion of this window, FIBA plans to announce the hosts for the fourth qualification phase, which is slated for late August 2026.

The regional board has extended the deadline for Window 4 hosting applications until May 15, 2026. For now, the focus remains on the July series, which promises high-octane basketball as Africa's elite teams vie for supremacy.
