Cam Thomas Accepts One-Year Qualifying Offer to Stay with Brooklyn Nets

Posted : 04 September 2025

Cam Thomas will remain with the Brooklyn Nets for at least one more season after agreeing to a one-year, $6 million qualifying offer, sources confirmed on Thursday. The decision ends negotiations on a long-term extension and positions the 23-year-old guard to enter unrestricted free agency next summer, when more than 10 teams are projected to have significant cap space.

Thomas becomes the first of the remaining restricted free agents to make his decision, a group that also includes Josh Giddey of the Chicago Bulls, Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors, and Quentin Grimes of the Philadelphia 76ers. He is just the fifth former first-round pick since 2017 to sign a qualifying offer rather than a multi-year deal.

His agents, Ron Shade and Alex Saratsis of Octagon, held extensive talks with Brooklyn, but ultimately turned down offers of a two-year, $30 million contract with a team option, as well as a one-year deal worth $9.5 million with incentives up to $11 million—both of which required waiving the no-trade clause attached to the qualifying offer.

The restricted free agent market had been slow-moving, in part because the Nets were among the few teams with meaningful cap space this offseason, effectively stalling negotiations league-wide.

On the court, Thomas has established himself as one of Brooklyn’s most dynamic scorers. He averaged 24.0 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in 31.2 minutes per game last season, though he was limited to just 25 appearances due to recurring hamstring issues. Despite the absences, he continued to show his ability to draw defensive attention—being double-teamed on 18% of his touches, the fourth-highest rate in the league among players with at least 1,000 possessions.

Over the past two seasons, Thomas has averaged 22.9 points per game, a significant jump from his first two years when he put up just 9.5 points in limited minutes. He already owns nine career 40-point games, trailing only Vince Carter, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant on the Nets’ all-time list.

By taking the qualifying offer, Thomas secures short-term control over his future and sets up what could be a lucrative free agency next summer if he stays healthy and continues his scoring surge.
