Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham has been diagnosed with a collapsed lung, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The condition is considered mild, but it is expected to sideline the 24-year-old for an extended period while the team monitors his recovery.
Cunningham, a two-time All-Star and one of the frontrunners in the NBA MVP race, left Tuesday’s game against the Washington Wizards after sustaining what the team initially described as back spasms. He was injured early in the first quarter while diving for a loose ball and played only a few more minutes before exiting the game.
The Pistons, who currently hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 49-19 record, are gathering more information on Cunningham’s condition.
There is cautious optimism that he could return in time for the start of the NBA playoffs on April 18. This season, Cunningham is averaging 24.5 points and 9.9 assists over 61 games, narrowly missing the 65-game threshold required for eligibility in regular-season awards such as MVP and All-NBA honors.
