Buss Siblings File Opposition as Legal Battle Over Lakers Stake Intensifies

Posted : 08 October 2026

The dispute over the Buss family’s remaining ownership in the Lakers escalated Wednesday after Jimmy, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss filed a formal response challenging their sister Jeanie Buss’s effort to stop the proposed transaction.

The five siblings maintain that their decision to sell the family trust’s remaining 17.82% interest in the franchise is legally valid. They said their priority is to move the transaction forward while ensuring that all beneficiaries of the trust, including Jeanie, are treated fairly.

Jeanie previously went to court to challenge the sale, arguing that her siblings’ vote violated the family trust and a 2017 court order. She contends that the order requires the trustees to take reasonable steps to preserve her position as the Lakers’ controlling governor.

The proposed transaction involves Josh Kushner and Bob Iger, who agreed to acquire the Lakers from Mark Walter at a reported $12.5 billion valuation. If the Buss family sells its remaining stake under the agreement, the trust is expected to receive roughly $2.2 billion.

A major issue in the case is Jeanie’s position with the Lakers. NBA rules require a team governor to own at least 15% of a franchise. Selling the family trust’s 17.82% holding would therefore leave Jeanie without the ownership stake required to continue in that role.

In their latest filing, the five siblings argue that the 2017 court order does not prevent beneficiaries from exercising their separate rights to terminate the trust. They also contend that Jeanie’s efforts to stop the sale are driven by her desire to preserve her role with the Lakers and conflict with her responsibilities to the trust and its beneficiaries.

The court has scheduled a hearing for December 8 after an earlier November 5 date was postponed to accommodate Jeanie’s attorney, Adam Streisand. Until the legal dispute is resolved, the future of the Buss family’s remaining Lakers ownership remains uncertain.
