Bucks GM Jon Horst Explains Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Decision

Posted : 09 July 2026

Milwaukee Bucks general manager Jon Horst has admitted that trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo was one of the toughest decisions of his career, but believes it was ultimately the right move for both the organization and the two-time NBA MVP. Horst acknowledged that the Bucks are not a stronger team without Antetokounmpo, describing him as the greatest player in franchise history, but said the deal was made with the club's long-term future in mind.

The blockbuster trade, agreed two weeks ago, sent Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in exchange for four players, multiple first-round draft picks, a future pick swap and a second-round selection. Horst explained that Miami's package offered the flexibility and young talent needed to begin a new chapter as Milwaukee looks to rebuild under recently appointed head coach Taylor Jenkins.

Although the move marked the end of a 13-year partnership with the player who led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship, Horst said he is excited by the challenge of constructing a competitive roster capable of sustained success. He also expressed satisfaction that Antetokounmpo now has an opportunity to pursue his own championship ambitions in Miami.

The Bucks endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, finishing with a 32-50 record and missing the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade. While some viewed the trade as unavoidable, Horst rejected that notion, insisting the franchise acted because it believed the deal represented the best possible outcome for both sides rather than out of necessity.

Horst emphasized that Milwaukee's priority throughout the process was securing the strongest possible foundation for the future while ensuring Antetokounmpo landed in a situation that aligned with his aspirations. The Bucks now turn their attention to rebuilding with a younger core and significant draft assets as they begin a new era without their long-time superstar.
