Bronny James enters NCAA transfer portal, delaying NBA draft eligibility

Posted : 04 April 2024

Early predictions suggested that Bronny James, son of NBA legend LeBron James, would enter the upcoming NBA draft and potentially play alongside his father in the league. However, a recent report from New York Post reporter Dirk Weiss revealed a change in plans: Bronny has entered the NCAA transfer portal and will depart from the University of Southern California to join another college, delaying his draft eligibility until 2025, when LeBron will be 40 years old.

Bronny's decision to transfer comes after a challenging first season at USC, where he struggled on the court and also faced a life-threatening health scare. Last August, Bronny suffered a heart attack during a college practice, which resulted in him losing consciousness. Swift action from the medical staff at USC saved his life and prevented potential brain damage, highlighting the severity of the situation.

This development raises questions about LeBron's future plans, especially considering he recently signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers that includes a player option for the summer of 2025. This option allows LeBron to potentially leave the Lakers after the upcoming season to play alongside his son. However, LeBron neither confirmed nor denied the report when asked about it after the Lakers' victory over the Toronto Raptors, stating that Bronny will make his own decisions and that the family will support him regardless.
