Mavericks’ Brandon Williams Apologises After Arrest for Marijuana Possession

Posted : 30 October 2025

Dallas Mavericks guard Brandon Williams has publicly apologised for “being a distraction” after his arrest on a marijuana possession charge at Dallas Fort Worth Airport on Saturday.

Williams, 25, missed two Mavericks games after less than two ounces of marijuana—illegal for recreational use in the state of Texas—were discovered in his luggage.

The guard returned to action in style, contributing 20 points and seven rebounds off the bench in the Mavericks’ narrow 107–105 victory over the Indiana Pacers at the American Airlines Center.

Speaking after the game, Williams said:

“I can’t really go into further detail. I just want to apologise for being a distraction. I take full accountability.”

Although the NBA no longer prohibits marijuana use and officially ended testing for the substance in 2023, the possession of marijuana remains an offense under Texas law.

The Mavericks currently sit 12th in the Western Conference, having won two of their opening five games this season.

Elsewhere in the NBA

Matas Buzelis scored 27 points, while Josh Giddey and Nikola Vucevic both recorded double-doubles as the Chicago Bulls extended their perfect start to the season with a 126–113 win over the Sacramento Kings. The Bulls now top the Eastern Conference with a 4–0 record.

In Minneapolis, Austin Reaves hit a buzzer-beater to lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116–115 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Reaves finished with 28 points and 16 assists, stepping up in the absence of injured stars LeBron James and Luka Doncic.

Ja Morant led the Memphis Grizzlies with 28 points in a victory over the Phoenix Suns, handing the Suns their fourth straight defeat.

In Salt Lake City, Jrue Holiday sank four crucial free throws in the closing seconds to secure a 136–134 win for the Portland Trail Blazers against the Utah Jazz.

The New Orleans Pelicans remain winless in the Western Conference after a 122–88 loss to the Denver Nuggets, while Kevin Durant scored 31 points—including 12 in the fourth quarter—to lead the Houston Rockets to a 139–121 win over the Toronto Raptors.

At Detroit, Cade Cunningham posted 30 points and 10 assists, inspiring the Pistons to a 135–116 victory over the struggling Orlando Magic, who have now lost four in a row.

In Brooklyn, the Atlanta Hawks rallied from a 12–0 deficit to beat the Brooklyn Nets 117–112, leaving the Nets winless after five games. Meanwhile, Jaylen Brown scored a game-high 30 points to power the Boston Celtics to a 125–105 home win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
