Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens has emphasized that All-Star forward Jaylen Brown remains an important part of the franchise, despite growing trade speculation surrounding the veteran star.
His comments came shortly after reports that the Celtics had explored a major trade package involving Brown and future draft picks in an attempt to acquire Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The proposed deal ultimately fell through, with Antetokounmpo instead being traded to the Miami Heat.
Speaking after Boston’s first-round selection of Houston forward Chris Cenac Jr. in the NBA Draft, Stevens did not directly address the failed trade talks but spoke at length about Brown’s importance to the team.
He described Brown as a key figure in the Celtics’ long-term plans and praised both his character and contributions on and off the court. Stevens noted that while the future is always uncertain in professional sports, the organization continues to value Brown highly and has consistently built around him in recent years.
The Celtics executive also revealed that he has held regular private conversations with Brown throughout the offseason, as well as ongoing communication with the player’s representatives. He acknowledged that constant trade rumours can be difficult for players, but said the organization has tried to be transparent and professional in handling discussions.
Stevens added that while he prefers to keep internal conversations private, he is aware of the external noise surrounding high-profile players like Brown and the impact such speculation can have.
Brown, 29, is coming off one of the strongest seasons of his career, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists. His performances earned him All-NBA second-team honors and a sixth-place finish in MVP voting, although Boston suffered a surprising first-round playoff exit.
Despite the early postseason disappointment, Brown previously described the season as one of the most enjoyable of his career. Over his decade with the Celtics, he has become one of the franchise’s most accomplished players, winning an NBA championship in 2024 along with Finals MVP and multiple All-Star selections.
However, his long-term future in Boston remains uncertain. Reports suggest that the Celtics have continued to listen to trade offers involving Brown even after the collapse of the Antetokounmpo deal.
Brown still has three years remaining on his current contract extension and will be eligible for another significant extension in 2026, keeping his status as a central topic of NBA offseason discussion.
