Free-agent forward Ben Simmons is set to participate fully in Australia's player-led basketball minicamp in Melbourne, with sources indicating he will have no restrictions. The 30-year-old has made the camp an important part of his efforts to rebuild his career after missing the entire 2025-26 NBA season.
Simmons sat out last season to concentrate on recovering from the back and other injuries that have disrupted his career. His most recent NBA action came during the 2024-25 campaign, when he played for the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, appearing in 18 regular-season games for the Clippers before featuring in five playoff contests.
The Melbourne native has reportedly regained much of the athleticism that made him one of the NBA's most versatile young players. He has primarily been training in Miami, and his progress has already attracted attention from several NBA teams. Simmons is reportedly willing to accept a minimum contract, while a Western Conference team has offered him a non-guaranteed training-camp opportunity.
Simmons also has ambitions of returning to the Australian national team, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics a major target. He has paid his own expenses to attend the Melbourne minicamp, underlining his determination to make his way back into the Boomers setup.
The former No. 1 overall draft pick enjoyed a strong start to his NBA career after being selected by Philadelphia in 2016. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2018 and earned three consecutive All-Star selections from 2019 through 2021, along with an All-NBA third-team selection and two All-Defensive first-team honors.
However, persistent injuries have significantly limited his availability in recent seasons. He has not played more than 60 games in a season since the 2018-19 campaign, making his unrestricted return to training an important step in his latest comeback attempt.
Simmons has previously represented Australia, making his senior debut at the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championship as a teenager. He has not played for the Boomers at an Olympics, but his latest return to the national-team environment could provide a pathway toward finally achieving that goal.
