Bayelsa Blue Whales responded positively to their midweek setback against First Bank, defeating Royal Aces 57-45 on Thursday in the ongoing NBBF Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball Premier League Phase One in Lagos.
The Yenagoa-based side entered the encounter needing a strong response after surrendering a promising run with a 50-39 defeat to First Bank on Wednesday.
The victory over Royal Aces therefore came at an important moment for the Prosperity Girls, restoring confidence in the camp and keeping their campaign on course as they battle for a strong position ahead of Phase Two.
Bayelsa Blue Whales had earlier announced their potential with an emphatic 58-28 victory over defending champions Dolphins, following their opening defeat to basketball powerhouse MFM.
However, their momentum was halted by First Bank, leaving Thursday’s fixture against Royal Aces as an important opportunity to recover.
The Blue Whales seized that opportunity, producing a determined all-round performance to establish control of the contest and eventually secure a 12-point victory.
The result adds another important win to their campaign and should provide the team with renewed confidence as they prepare for the remaining fixtures in Phase One.
The Prosperity Girls are still expected to face IGP Queens and First Deep Waters as they continue their push to strengthen their position before the completion of the Lagos phase.
The team’s immediate objective will be to maintain consistency and avoid the fluctuations that have characterised their campaign so far, having recorded convincing victories as well as disappointing defeats.
Phase Two of the competition is scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt from September 1 to 7, where Bayelsa Blue Whales will be looking to carry their improved form into the next stage.
With the National Finals also in sight, the Yenagoa-based side will hope their victory over Royal Aces marks the beginning of another positive run as the battle for supremacy in the women’s basketball league intensifies.
