Bayelsa Blue Whales ended Phase One of the NBBF Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball Premier League with a convincing 69-32 victory over IGP Queens in Lagos on Saturday. The Prosperity Girls secured fourth place in the Atlantic Conference after producing a dominant performance in their final game.
The Yenagoa-based side controlled the contest with disciplined defence and efficient attacking play. The 37-point victory also completed a strong recovery after a difficult start to their campaign.
Bayelsa opened the competition with a heavy 65-29 defeat to MFM before suffering another setback against Victoria Queens. They responded with a 59-37 victory over First Deep Water, which helped restore confidence within the squad.
The Prosperity Girls then produced one of their best results of the phase by defeating defending champions Dolphins 58-28. They followed that performance with a 50-39 loss to First Bank before bouncing back against Royal Aces.
Bayelsa defeated Royal Aces 57-45 on Thursday to regain winning momentum. The result was followed by another commanding display against IGP Queens, giving the team a positive finish to the Lagos phase.
Head coach Tony Nelson praised his players for their resilience and ability to remain focused during a challenging campaign. He said the team showed character by continuing to fight for positive results despite difficult travelling conditions.
Nelson also expressed confidence that the Prosperity Girls can improve during Phase Two. He said the team is determined to respond to the growing expectations surrounding its performances.
The coach further praised the Bayelsa State Government for its support of basketball development. He acknowledged Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Peter Akpe and Sports Development Commissioner Daniel Igali for their contributions to the team's progress.
Bayelsa's fourth-place finish keeps them in contention for qualification for the National Finals. The top four teams from each conference will advance to the Final Eight stage, making the second phase crucial for the Prosperity Girls.
The league has continued to receive strong backing from Zenith Bank, which has supported the women's competition for many years. The sponsorship has helped sustain the domestic pathway for players and clubs competing at the highest national level.
Phase Two is scheduled for September 1 to 7 in Port Harcourt. Bayelsa Blue Whales will enter the next stage with renewed confidence as they seek to build on their fourth-place Atlantic Conference finish and strengthen their push for a place in the National Finals.
